Morocco Sample Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive to Morocco
Arrive in Casablanca. Visit the site of the magnificent Hassan II Mosque. After visiting the mosque and enjoying a tour with your French-speaking Moroccan guide, check into your hotel in the Medina of Casablanca to enjoy your first Moroccan meal.
Day 2: French immersion in the Atlas Mountains
Drive to Douar Sbiti, a village in the Atlas Mountains. Prepare questions for local families (in French). Visit local families and get answers to the questions you prepared earlier (facilitated by program leaders). Attend a French-spoken cooking class led by a well-known chef! Take note of the recipe and use your new French vocabulary to comment and ask questions!
Day 3: Todgha Gorges
Drive through the stunning rock formations and small villages tucked between the Atlas Mountain cliffs. Attend a presentation about the Argan industry in Morocco (in French). Check in to the Todgha Gorges cave guesthouse, enjoy a meal at a traditional auberge, and participate in a story-telling activity.
Day 4: Into the Sahara
Hike around the area with a local guide, and learn about the flora and fauna of the area. Afterwards, drive to the Sahara. En-route, play games in French, pass through amazing landscapes of olive trees and marvel at small Moroccan villages. Upon arrival, we will prepare for our camel caravan journey into the dunes at sunset. Chat with the Bedouins who care for the camels and maintain the desert camp. Enter the desert camp and have a welcoming cup of mint tea before partaking in a hearty dinner of harira (soup) and tagine. Enjoy a moonlit walk on the dunes before falling asleep in traditional Moroccan tents.
Day 5: Ait Benhaddou Scavenger hunt
Wake up early to get a view of an incredible sunrise from the nearby dunes. Try sand boarding or “Moroccan Moonwalking” through the dunes before packing up and heading back to Merzouga. Arrive in the 14th century village of Ait Benhaddou to stay the night in your own mudbrick Kasbah. Before dinner, participate in a Kasbah scavenger hunt where we will use our French language skills.
Day 6: Marvelous Marrakech
Head to Marrakech. After a drive through the towering peaks of the High Atlas Mountains, we’ll arrive in the afternoon and check into our riad. Meet with some Marrakechi locals for a cross-cultural discussion over dinner at a local French-Moroccan restaurant.
Day 7: More of Marrakech
Explore Marrakech and its bustling souqs. Use your French language skills to bargain in the markets and don’t forget to buy something for your “secret sadiqii” (the Moroccan version of secret santa) – you’ll present your gifts to each other and use your French to explain your choice later in the evening. Possible additional activities include: visit the Ben Youssef Madersa, Bahia Palace, Majorelle Garden, El Badi Palace, a photography studio cafe, and the Almoravid koubba(dome). Enjoy our final dinner in Jamya El-Fna.
Day 8: Fly home!
