Seal of Biliteracy

In the context of today’s globalized world, DCPS wants to recognize students who have exhibited a commitment to biliteracy and bilingualism. The DCPS Seal of Biliteracy is an award presented to DCPS juniors and seniors who have attained proficiency in two or more languages. Students who demonstrate cultural competency through an immersion experience in the target language, in addition to attaining proficiency in two or more languages, are eligible for The DCPS Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction.  Seniors who will receive proficiency exams scores after graduation should still apply; these students will be considered Candidates for the Seal of Biliteracy until scores are confirmed.

The application deadline is May 11, 2018. For more information, please visit The DCPS Seal of Biliteracy website or contact Elizabeth Blesson at Elizabeth.blesson@dc.gov.

Global Scholar Certificate

A Global Scholars Certificate (GSC) is transcript recognition available to secondary students.  The GSC indicates that a student has dedicated significant time to develop their global competence and has successfully demonstrated an exceptional level of global understanding.

Any DCPS secondary student may apply for a GSC, beginning in 10th grade.  This is not a mandated or track program at specific school sites, but rather a district-wide certificate that recognizes achievements gathered from existing DCPS programs and curricula.

Students must complete the requirements outlined below, modeled on the US Department of Education’s newly released Global Competence Framework and the DCPS Seal of Biliteracy requirements.  Interested students are invited to apply beginning in the fall of their 10th grade year. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and students must apply before April 15 of their 12th grade year.
